Male Skin: The Facts

Male Skin: The Facts

With the majority of skincare products and advice targeted at women, it can be hard to understand what your skin actually needs as a man. Are male and female skins really that different? We take a look...

Male skin is 24% thicker than female skin

Skin naturally becomes thinner with age, while environmental and aggressors can also contribute. Thinner skin is prone to lines, wrinkles and sagging. Due to its thickness, male skin tends to be more resilient with a rougher skin texture.

Male skin has a higher quantity of collagen and elastin

Collagen and elastin are the support structures of our skin. They keep it firm, plump and maintain elasticity. Lower levels cause the skin to lose its volume, develop a crepey effect and form lines and wrinkles. Due to higher levels of natural collagen and elastin, male skin tends to appearance firmer.

Male skin tends to be more oily

The majority of females will find their skin to be on the dry side, especially as they age. Dry skin tends to show the signs of ageing first due to its lack of oil. On the other hand, male skin tends to be oily. While this may have a slight benefit in the ageing stakes, it also makes them more prone to enlarged pores, blemishes and spots.

Shaving causes irritation

Regular shaving causes irritation to the skin's outer barrier, leaving the skin prone to sensitivity and dehydration. After shaving you should only use gentle, nourishing products to restore the skin.
