What is Keratosis Pilaris?
Did you know that over half the population suffers from misdiagnosed skin conditions that can be easily treated? As well as treating and looking after ageing skin, we also treat a wide range of medical skin conditions. With long Dermatologist waiting times “ and skin problems often requiring more immediate treatment “ more and more people are turning to the private aesthetics sector to seek help and advice.
Some of the most common skin concerns that we see on a regular basis are keratosis, folliculitis, eczema and dermatitis. Over the next few months we will be taking an in-depth look at some of the most common concerns that come into clinic on a daily basis. This month we are talking all about Keratosis Pilaris aka 'chicken skin'. This common skin condition often goes undetected or is misdiagnosed.
As aestheticians, we regularly treat skin which makes us experts at spotting early signs of disorders. Keratosis Pilaris can be identified by red, rough patches of skin and is most commonly situated on the upper arms and legs. Although less common, it is not unheard of for it to appear on the face, neck and chest.
Many patients try self-diagnosing and treating the condition from home believing it to be an allergy or dry skin. Over exfoliating the area and using harsh scrubs may actually make the condition worse. It is important, if in doubt, to get it checked out.
So what exactly is Keratosis Pilaris?
Keratosis Pilaris gets it name from keratin, the protein within the top layer of skin called epidermis and pilaris from the Latin meaning 'hair'. This means it's a build up of excess keratinised hair causing over keratinisation of the skin's hair ducts.
The recommended treatment for Keratosis Pilaris is a 15% Glycolic Acid wash, followed by a body lotion containing again, Glycolic Acid as well as Vitamin A, Azelaic Acid and Glutathione. Glycolic Acid works by breaking down built up keratin and de-congesting hair plugs, whist Azelaic Acid reduces skin inflammation. Glutathione brightens the skin and works as a powerful antioxidant and finally Vitamin A regenerates new collagen and elastin fibres, repairing the skin and leaving a healthy glow.To help combat the symptoms of Keratosis Pilaris, Face the Future suggests these products
