Student skincare doesn’t need to mean an expensive shelf full of products. Our Skin Expert Suzanne shares three affordable acne essentials, while our team reveals the advice we wish we could give our younger selves about breakouts.

University can be full of changes. New surroundings, new home, new diet, new lifestyle, new friends, new routine. A lot can affect your skin at this time.  If breakouts are becoming another thing on your list to deal with, there’s no need to build an expensive, complicated routine. Yes, really. As part of our Acne At Every Age campaign, we asked Suzanne, our Skin Expert, for the three affordable essentials she thinks earn their place in a student skincare routine.

What Does a Student Acne Routine Actually Need?

When skincare advice is everywhere, it can feel as though you need a different serum, acid or treatment for every concern. For breakout-prone skin, more products aren’t necessarily the answer.

Start by getting the foundations right. A gentle cleanser helps remove everyday build-up and excess oil, a moisturiser keeps hydration and your skin barrier supported, and daily SPF protects your skin each morning. Targeted blemish products can then be added where you actually need them.

The goal is a routine simple enough to stick to, even during 9am lectures, exam season and the occasional very late night.

Suzanne’s 3 Low-Budget Student Acne Essentials

Good skincare on a student budget is about choosing products that work hard for their place in your routine. These are Suzanne’s three picks.

La Roche-Posay Effaclar Purifying Gel Cleanser

If your breakouts don’t stop at your face, choosing a cleanser you can use across several areas makes sense, particularly when you want to get more from your budget.

Suzanne explains:

“Depending on how your skin is presenting, a great product to use in your daily routine is La Roche-Posay Effaclar Purifying Gel Cleanser 400ml. This budget-friendly cleanser can be used on the face and also for those who experience breakouts on the chest, back and shoulders. It’s ideal for multiple areas that can be concerned with breakout-prone skin.”

Its larger 400ml size makes it a particularly practical option for everyday use across both face and body.

Clinisept Plus Aftercare

Sometimes convenience matters just as much as what a product does. Think rushing between lectures, heading to the gym or wanting something straightforward that doesn’t add another complicated step.

Suzanne says:

“Clinisept Plus is a great addition to a student skincare routine because it helps reduce acne-causing bacteria without stinging or drying the skin. Its gentle, alcohol-free formula can be sprayed directly onto multiple areas of the face or body, making it quick, convenient, and ideal for keeping blemish-prone skin clean, calm, and supported.”

Its spray format also makes it easy to use across breakout-prone areas beyond the face.

Eucerin DermoPure Clinical Hydra Repair Fluid

Moisturiser can be one of the first products people question when their skin feels oily or congested, but breakout-prone skin still needs hydration.

Suzanne recommends:

“Lightweight and non-comedogenic, this moisturiser works really well in any routine concerned with breakouts. It includes ingredients that can calm inflamed skin, maintain hydration and reduce moisture loss, whilst keeping the skin barrier happy.”

Rather than trying to dry your skin out completely, supporting hydration can help keep it feeling comfortable and balanced. You can learn more in our guide to moisturisers for acne-prone skin.

Student Acne: What Not to Overdo

When a breakout appears the night before a seminar, date or big night out, doing more can feel like the obvious answer. Your skin may benefit more from consistency than another round of scrubbing, cleansing or strong actives.

  • Don’t over-cleanse: repeatedly washing your face can leave skin feeling tight and irritated.
  • Don’t skip moisturiser: oily skin can still become dehydrated.
  • Go easy on actives: combining several acids or blemish treatments can overwhelm your skin.
  • Try not to pick: squeezing spots can increase irritation and make lingering marks more likely.
  • Give your routine time: changing products every few days makes it difficult to know what is actually helping.
  • Keep things manageable: a few well-chosen products used consistently can go a long way.

What We’d Tell Our Younger Selves About Acne

We can recommend cleansers and moisturisers all day, but anyone who has dealt with acne knows it can feel like much more than a skincare concern.

When you’re younger, a breakout can influence whether you want to be in a photo, leave the house without makeup or simply stop thinking about your skin for five minutes.

Looking back, Lauren, our Brand Manager, would remind her younger self that life shouldn’t have to wait for clear skin:

“Be kinder to yourself. You’re spending so much time trying to hide your skin that you’re missing out on making memories. Confidence comes long before perfect skin.”

Jess, our Head of Marketing Comms, would focus on keeping things simple and learning more about what her skin actually needed:

“Keep your routine simple. My skin would flare up with blemishes, and I would use more serums and treatments, which impaired my skin barrier further. I didn't know any better back then, but I should have done more research beforehand. Knowledge is power!”
